Read more about the Merchant Navy's development in The Engine Shed

Conceived in 1937 when Oliver Bulleid became Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Southern Railway, the Merchant Navy Class represented Bulleid’s vision for a quick accelerating, mixed traffic 4-6-2 locomotive, equally capable of hauling passenger services (such as the Golden Arrow and Atlantic Coast Expresses), or freight workings, to a speed of around 75mph. Mainly designed from the Brighton Works Drawing Office, under C.S Cocks, Bulleid, always aware of practical applications and costing implications, ensured that the best design practices of the time were applied to the new locomotive. Like his mentor, Nigel Gresley, Bulleid was a technically arrogant CME, an advocate of locomotives being driven hard and to brisk schedules and this materialised in his design ideas.

Stunning Loco

This loco really is visually stunning, and such a beautifully smooth runner, it's been several weeks since its release and I still haven't tired of watching it circulate my layout.

There is so much attention to detail, the cab is exquisite!

The only thing that lets it down for me is the moulded bogie wheel under the cab, as it is fixed in place it looks a bit ridiculous going around curves with the cab wheels hanging off the side of the rails which is a bit of a let down and it can't really negotiate curves smaller than radius 3 meaning on my current layout it is restricted to the outer-most route of my outer circuit.

Other than that I can not fault it :) Hornby have really upped their game with this one!... Read more

Only one thing lacking!

Like the other reviews of Channel Packet. Hornby have surpassed themselves with this excellent model. But one thing is lacking. Why have Hornby not fitted lights for use with a DCC decoder. After all this class was revolutionary in so many ways including electric lanes front and rear for route codes. Perhaps the next version may have them. The tender will be easy but the two smoke box lamps could be fiddly unless I use a Head code that doesn't require them. Still Top Marks to Hornby.
