Description
The ‘Black Fives’ were mixed traffic class locomotives, a ‘do-anything-go-anywhere’ type, designed by Sir William Stanier. In their early days the locomotives were known as the ‘Black Staniers’ from their black livery but later on they became known as ‘Black Fives’; the number referring to the power classification. ‘Black Fives’ occasionally worked as far south as Bournemouth and even ran over the Mid Hants Railway, 'the 'Watercress Line'. This locomotive class was large enough for the steep gradients but small enough to be economical. Eighteen of the Class have been preserved. In 1974, ‘45379’ was bought for restoration and taken to the Avon Valley Railway, then later to The Great Central Railway. It was bought from there by MHRPS, coming to Alresford on 1 March, 2002.
The restoration of ‘45379’ was completed in time for the Somerset & Dorset Steam Spectacular that ran between 10-12 September appearing alongside the visiting S&DJR Class 7F No. 88, the five year restoration effort visible for all to see. ‘45379’ is currently a welcome guest of The 1:1 Collection, awaiting overhaul for its return to steam.

Very fine model of the Black 5 MT. I look forward to recreating the last days of BR steam or fun days at the Watercress Line. I have been away from the hobby for the last 50 years it's nice to see Hornby growing and moving back to Margate. I can see this model will become one of my favorites. The only odd quirk of the model is the right side window molding includes a "Glass seat" inside the cab for the crew - was this overlooked and should have been removed?

there are two things that not write with this loco firstly , the cab doors are at an open angle you cannot adjust as they brake off. all the other black fives i have the doors in straight ahead also the draw bar can not go back any further as it would touch the plug socket.secondly the screw to fix the front coupling was to small, just went straight through the hole.apart from that its a lovely loco

Black 5 45379 review
An absolute charm, ideal to recreate times in both BR days and in preservation. The Class 5MTs are renown for their fame and glory and they look good with either goods or passenger. I have another one from the 80s number 5112 and there is a noticeable difference in looks and performance, especially since the motor is now in the boiler and the motor is much smoother and quieter. Fitting the sound chip took me about 15 mins or so, so that aspect was fiddly. But aside from that I am very happy with this model!
