Sir Nigel Gresley

5th April 2016 marked the 75th anniversary of the death of one of the world’s most famous steam locomotive engineers, Sir Nigel Gresley. Beginning his career at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and Great Northern Railway, Gresley joined the newly formed London and North Eastern Railway as Chief Mechanical Engineer in 1923.

During his career Gresley has been responsible for the design of several of the most famous British steam locomotives, including the LNER A1 and A3 Class (such as Flying Scotsman), LNER Class A4 (Mallard, Silver Jubilee), and the P2 Class (Cock O’ The North).

A statue of Sir Nigel Gresley is to be unveiled at London King’s Cross station to commemorate the 75th anniversary of his death.

The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Ltd is the owner and operator of the A4 Pacific locomotive 4498 / 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, the post war steam speed record holder. www.sirnigelgresley.org.uk
