Description
By 1926, faced with a stock book of outdated and unsuitable mainline locomotive traction, the London Midland Scottish Railway had an urgent need for “provision of an improved and more powerful type of passenger engine for the purpose of avoiding double heading and duplication of certain heavy express passenger main line services”.
In October 1926, following a degree of procrastination by the management of the LMS, the loan of Great Western Castle class No.5000 Launceston Castle spurred the LMS into action and in December, an order for fifty ‘improved’ 4-6-0 tender engines from North British was placed; the result being the iconic ‘Royal Scot’ class of locomotive.

It tended to stall on various places on the track. I found that the tender pickups were not touching the wheels. Easy to fix, but naughty, Hornby. The loco wheels were dirty, which didn't help. Happened during running in, maybe? Still don't regret buying it, but up your quality, please.

The Ranger
I read the first review before I purchased my loco, so first thing to check was the back to back measurements on all wheels. Immediately I could see the leading axle on the pony wheels was hilariously narrow gauge and to a lesser extent, the other pony wheel axle also. All other wheels appeared ok, but I could see evidence of the loco having been run on the driving wheels. I ran the loco over point work and plain line and I'm relieved all is well. I wonder if this is one or the same loco...

Royal Scot Review
Purchased recently. First sample ran poorly, derailed easily. Returned for replacement. Second sample slightly better, but consistently derailed on crossovers while running at around half maximum speed. Returned for a refund. Big disappointment - design defect?
