The Class 87 locomotive design resulted from a requirement for a more powerful mixed traffic electrical locomotive by British Rail, needed to cope with the route gradients of the West Coast Main Line between Weaver Junction and Glasgow. Electrification had been newly authorised over this section in 1970 and was scheduled for completion by May 1974, leaving little time to design a completely new locomotive from scratch and so British Rail decided to base the new class on the existing Class 86 locomotives.
Hornby is the UK’s leading model railway brand. Its high quality 00 gauge models (1:76) are slightly bigger than H0 (1:87), but will run on the same gauge track.

First of all, being a very fussy person I'd say my rating for this loco would be somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.
I have to choose however between 4 and 5 stars and decided to tick 5 stars after all.
This loco comes close to being immaculate and can be compared with the likes of Bachmann UK.
A few quite minor things which would be the reason for me to still subtract half a star :
The package is causing a little bit of a dull glossy spot on the yellow front panels because of rubbing.
The same is applicable to the underside of the body between the driver door and the front. A quite small faint paint blemish is visible on 3 of the 4 sides.
However having said that it is hardly noticeable unless you look very close under certain angles.
I have put some soft tissues at those spots when I put the loco in its box to prevent further blemishes.
It runs fine and with Legomanbiffo sound it is a beautiful loco !
