Description
New Tool
The Class 87 locomotive design resulted from a requirement for a more powerful mixed traffic electrical locomotive by British Rail, needed to cope with the route gradients of the West Coast Main Line between Weaver Junction and Glasgow. Electrification had been newly authorised over this section in 1970 and was scheduled for completion by May 1974, leaving little time to design a completely new locomotive from scratch and so British Rail decided to base the new class on the existing Class 86 locomotives.

As soon as I heard Hornby were producing a Class 87 I ordered one! I had to wait nearly two years, but finally it’s here and it’s been worth the wait. The detailing is stunning with loads of neat little, well designed parts (10/10), fit and finish are of a good standard (9/10). It runs extremely well (10/10) and looks great on my Dean Park Station layout. Some buyers have questioned a plastic pantograph, and while not sprung it is easy to poise and looks very good. Well done Hornby. Now give us MORE 87’s please, lots more!
