New couplings for wagons, is it worth it?

I have been given a Hornby Dublo Saxa Salt wagon and a Lima (i believe) Schweppes Tonic Water wagon.

First question: is it worth putting new couplings (Hornby) onto these wagons?

Second question: How would I go about this task?

TIA

Is it worth it? Well I suppose you should ask yourself why would I need to? Entirely up to you. Everything I have has been fitted with narrow tension lock couplings because I like them.

How do you do it. Depends what the wagon has now and how good you are at mini engineering. My way was to remove the old coupling and then think now what do I need to do.

Hi

In answer to your question the Hornby Dublo Saxa Salt the answer is no a new replacement Dapol 10' wagon chassis would be the best option as Dapol still produce the saxa salt wagon using the original tooling.

Lima should have the same as the wide fit Hornby tension lock coupling

I am not saying this is the answer in your particular case but in the past I have actually swapped the upper part of the wagon I like onto an alternative chassis with complete correct couplings which have usually been picked up cheaply. Just an idea you will have to evaluate the situation.

If you really want to use these wagons then you will probably will need to change the couplings.

In terms of current mini-tension lock couplings there are many ways of fitting these from gluing the drag-boxes from Hornby NEM couplings straight to the underside of your wagon else using the PA34 mounting blocks (previously) made by Parkside-Dundas for fitting drag-boxes (they also produced fittings for the older screw mount couplers).

A good starting point may be to search for couplings on websites such as Peter's Spares, Kernow, Gaugemaster and Rails of Sheffield,   😀

These mountings are now produced under the name "Parkside By Peco", as the tooling has been sold to Peco.

So, still available, and hopefully from more model shops that stock Peco items...
