On March 1, 2015, Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) took over the East Coast Mainline franchise from state-owned Directly Operated Railways’ (DOR) East Coast Trains. Although 90% owned by Stagecoach, the higher profile branding of 10% owners Virgin was chosen for the new fleet’s livery and on March 2nd a press launch was held at King’s Cross station, where Class 91 No.91124 and DVT No.82219, along with a full Mk 4 rake, were unveiled in the new VTEC livery.

The successful joint Stagecoach/Virgin £3.3 billion bid for the eight year East Coast rail franchise topped that of rivals FirstGroup and Keolis/Eurostar and although 90% owned by Stagecoach, the higher profile branding of 10% owners Virgin was chosen for the new fleet’s livery. On March 2nd 2015, a press launch was held at King’s Cross station, where Class 91 No.91124 and DVT No.82219, along with a full rake of Mark 4 coaches, were unveiled in the new VTEC livery.

In the year between April 2014 and March 2015, 20.6 million passengers were carried on the East Coast Main Line and VTEC run 155 services every weekday to meet this current demand. A £40 million plus redevelopment programme has been put in place; this includes £21 million spent revamping the interiors of the trains by installing Virgin coloured upholstery, new carpets and panelling, £16 million on new engines and up to £5 million on livery updates.

It is hoped the refurbishment of the existing rolling stock will boost capacity in preparation for the arrival of Hitachi Class 800 trains in 2018, which will replace the existing fleet and carry more passengers.

Is it going to be red and silver or red and white as the real thing? I understand these are pre production models based on the east coast ones.

Hi, love the new Virgin East Coast livery....but is this Class 91 and MK4 DVT a re-tool of the old models, or still the current tooling?

ltd edition virgin vtec livery 225

this set is a real credit to Hornby considering the the old tooling the vtec livery is applied very well , I have taken note of the other reviews and I think there rather unkind, may I point out that the loco now sports a much improved chassis having a new power bogie set up with a 5 pole motor and much improved power pick up on both sides also the traction tyers are now on opposite sides making an even traction on both sides all this and more weight added this loco has just hauled 14 mk 4 coaches and a dvt with no bother, as for comments about lights it is based on an old but much improved mechanically loco, \it is easy to retro fit lights as I will and have done to my two old gner versions of this model that still haul 9 coaches and a dvt with no bother the only thing I really would like to see is a better more scale pantograph , with a little scale detailing this is a lovely model with much potential, for the good price I got this set for it's a bargain ... Poor

The livery has been applied incorrectly as the stripes face the wrong way on one of the coaches, the quality is poor as it is a very outdated model with very poor detail for a ridiculous price!
