| Description

Following the financial collapse of Flying Scotsman plc in November 2003, 4472 Flying Scotsman was put up for auction by property consultants GVA Grimley, prompting fears that the iconic locomotive would be sold overseas, never to run on British rails again.

Placing a value on the iconic locomotive was considered to be “rather akin to valuing the crown jewels”, but with two International buyers being interested in purchasing Flying Scotsman, a “Save Our Scotsman” campaign to save her for the nation was launched by the National Railway Museum. With a bid of £2.31 million, comprising £441,644 raised by public donations. £365,000 match funding from the Virgin Group and a £1.8 million grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the campaign succeeded and Flying Scotsman was incorporated into the National Collection in April 2004.

In LNER Apple Green livery and numbered as 4472, Flying Scotsman returned to York on May 29, 2004 to open the NRM's Railfest 2004. Cheered on by thousands of onlookers and with the City of York Pipe Band marching alongside, Flying Scotsman broke a banner across the track, whilst the collection of attending locomotives blew their whistles in welcome.

TTS "Flying Scotsman" - I'm hooked!

This is the first model loco I have owned in 50 years. Naturally I had to get the "Flying Scotsman" as my first one and as it was advertised as digital with sound at a very reasonable price I thought I would give it a go and see what playing trains today is like. I got myself an eLink with Railmaster software which you run on a computer. Wow what a difference. I'm hooked. Furthermore, I can also control the train from my ipad wires free. I can set/change speed, bring it to a controlled stop, program it to operate in set sequences. It chuffs to the speed its going and you can get it to whistle or play other sounds at the touch of a button - even listen to the fireman making breakfast.
The engine itself looks impressive to me and operates perfectly on my track at crawls pace or at speed. I am more than happy with what Hornby has achieved here, definitely worth the money and will be coming back for more. ... Read more

TTS Sound Flying Scotsman

This is my first TTS sound train and I am very pleased with it. The sound is very realistic and it is quite cheap for how good it is. The train doesnt jerk, it runs very smoothly apart from that it sometimes derails at 2nd Radius Curves which it shouldnt do. Overall this is a very good buy and I am very pleased with this product.
