Coach Derailing

Hi,,,,,just bought four HORNBY super detail teaks off eBay ,second hand but new if you know at I mean ,,anyway one of them keeps on derailing ,no matter what I try ,where in the coach rake I put it it just derails ,if it is the end one it seems to be ok ,looking at it I can't see anything wrong with it ,the couplings are the spring loaded type ,any other coach with this type of coupling that I have doesn't seem to give any trouble at all ,.the derailing is usually as it leaves the curve ( 2nd or 3rd radius )and makes its way onto the straight section,,any ideas what could be the problem ,,,,,thankyou in advance ,,,,mjb

There are a few loco's with this type of coupling as well, and the usual cause is a 'pimple' in the moulding of the slidy bit of the spring coupling. The usual solution is to fix the hook and eye of the coupling into the centre with a pin, so it can still swing, but not slide from side to side.

The bogie is derailing because the slidy part is getting stuck at one end of it's travel, but as soon as the tension comes off it, it can spring back to the centre.

It might also be worth checking the back to back measurement of the wheels. If you haven't got a gauge at the moment I would advise getting one as many Hornby wheels are out.

However, if you want to check if this the problem before spending out on a gauge swap the wheels over with a coach that works and see what happens.

My long restaurant car was always derailing no matter where it was in a rake and it was a combination of both those problems highlighted above, one axle on each bogie was out of gauge and one end coupling had a bit of flash that snagged off centre.

Once both faults were rectified it went through my test slalom no problem.

Test slalom? - a 4ft length of board with some track on it with a double reverse curve and an turnout near the far end. I prop the near end up about 1" and run dodgy stock down the 1:48 slope. Just need to devise an emergency brake section for it to avoid the scramble to catch it before coming off the far end.
