SteamDave
My B17 loco "Barnsley" with LNER Stabndard tender slips with only a few new Hornby carriages. Has anyone esle had this problem?
walkingthedog
Are the carriages free running? Do the tender wheels turn freely?
The Doc
Hi SteamDave, Yes, I had exactly the same problem - with Barnsley, so possibly from the same batch as yours, and discovered two possible sources:I found that the front bogie had two washers fitted between it and the T-shaped bracket that holds it onto the loco. I only noticed this on removing the bogie. I think it should only have one. The effect gave no vertical movement on the bogie, which mean that at the slightest unevenness of track, the front driving wheels were lifted upwards slightly (and, due to the rigidity of the chassis, probably the middle drivers too). This meant that a 4-6-0 was behaving more like a 8-2-0 with only two driving wheels in contact with the rails. Check that there isn't a small piece of black polystyrene packaging between the tender and the loco, just beneath the footplate. This could lift the rear wheels slightly.Best of luck. Mine now runs superbly - the smoothest passenger loco I have.
atom3624
I've not had a B17 problem, but I recently had a serious 'play' with my Schools as I wanted all steel driving wheels and 2 are rubber tyred.I found the pressure / weight transferred to non-driven wheels is critical. The same will be true with your B17 4-6-0.The bogie wheels must track properly but nearly all locomotive weight must go through the driven wheels. Al. Derek 19B
Checked my B17 renamed and numbered from Barnsley , pulls okay with 5 Bachman coaches , with the Hornby Maunsel resturant car on its okay but wont restart on the curve . With the Bg and GUV added no chance of any movement .Five on for a class five is okay , my station only handels six any way .Derek 19b
GeoFF03
I have the Railroad version of the B17 "Liverpool", and it handles 5 of the railroad teaks with ease. I've not tried it with longer rakes as my layout is to small to run more that six without it looking ridiculous.
