advice re' fitting tts to a rougemont castle

i would like to fit a hornby  tts to above loco' which is from the red dragon express, the speaker is too large for the loco' and will obviously need to be fitted in the tender, however I cannot see any way to feed the speaker wires through the back of the loco' and into the tender apart from drilling small holes in both which I am reluctant to do to a new locomotive. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Welcome

Take a look at Service Sheet 306 downloadable from the Help and Advice area of the main Hornby site.

It should be possible to extend the speaker wires and pass the twin wires across from the loco to tender without drilling holes. The TTS speaker would mount in its enclosure facing up on top of the tender weight. Or if you have an old plastic Humbrol paint pot, cut the top off and use that as an enclosure.

Thank you for your email, the only entry into the tender is the point where the loco' drawbar pushes into what seems to be some kind of spring catch, has anyone else installed tts into this particular model?

Adopt the 'Plan B' that most others adopt.

.

Discard the over-sized Hornby TTS speaker and replace it with a small sugar-cube speaker that will fit in the loco along with the decoder. Changing the speaker will not void the TTS Waranty provided you follow the 'speaker changing' guidance in the TTS documentation.

Refer to the service sheet, which shows how the drawbar transfers power from the single pickup in the tender by way of that gripping springy bit.

@giacomo,

I have removed your two sequential errored re-quotes (no new fresh comments added).

.

You will have better luck with your replies if you do not use the 'white arrow in the blue box' button. This is not a 'Reply to this post' button.

.

Can I humbly suggest that next time you do not use the Blue button. It is best if you write your reply in the 'Reply to this post' text box at the bottom of the page and click the Green 'Reply' button.

.

Not having a go, using the blue button is something all relative newbies on the forum seem to do for some reason. I blame the forum SW developers for putting it there, just where a 'Reply' button is expected to be.

.

If you want to indicate that your reply is in response to a particular previous forum member post, then just head your reply with the @ symbol followed by their user name: Example @Chrissaf. Note how I have headed this reply with @giacomo.

.

PS - The 'speaker changing' guidance, is in this TTS Installation Guide document:

Forget about the supplied speaker and fit a sugar cube speaker in the loco. I have a castle which I fitted TTS.  My speaker is in the tender, but I used a sugar cube. I used one of the Hornby 4 pin plug and socket and fitted a permanent draw bar. The power connection and the speaker leads go through the 4 pin socket. Loco ad tender permanently joined.  The sugar cube us far better sound than the supplied speaker. At the same time as fitting TTS to castle I fitted two A4s. After a week one of them started to make cracking sound through speaker. Volume be never set above 50%, turned out to be the supplied speaker failing. Hornby replaced it,  but I  changed all my TTS locos to sugar cubes. One A4 is in tender the other is in loco. Castle in tender. Sound comes from correct location if in loco.
