GWR LNER fan 4472
Hi all, just a bit of fun here. What was your first train set? Mine was the Hornby Orient Express DCC fancy boxed set with up to track pack C I think. It was bought primerily for my mum, who wasn't allowed a model railway as a child for some reason, but it was also for the rest of the family. My dad still had some of his old stuff from the 1970s so that was used as well (his first set was a GWR pannier tank goods train set of some description). Soon to follow were the Flying Scotsman with 3 LNER teak coaches and 'Percy' and 2 troublesome trucks for the children.

37lover
Newmarella - 1956! The year I was introduced to the world! My first set was the GWR Torquay Pullman DCC set; bought about 10 years ago for my sons birthday. I built the layout and got hooked, he didn't. Today he is adamant that he didn't ask for a train set.
The Doc
A Triang clockwork set in about 1969 - a red loco and three bright wagons, circle of track and a level crossing. Sadly none have survived, but I still have my first electric loco - Nellie - from 1972, but with a replacement chassis.

RB51
Yes - I had one the tinplate clockwork sets, with great big clips that you pushed between tracks to keep them together. I loved it - until my sister decided to see how it coped with going down the stairs. A set just like it was sold on one of those TV auction programmes the other day for £65. Bulver
Around 1954, the HD 0-6-2 tank engine, with, I think, the small station, and signal box. I loved that loco so much, I stripped the paint of and re-decorated it in a green colour of some sort - my father was not pleased. The loco still did years of service with me, and then my nephews. cliveg
First set was a Triang RP.A clockwork set. It was a Christmas present in 1959. Still have loco and carriages which are operational. Box disappeared years ago and track is a little worse for wear./media/tinymce_upload/5f40af2308b7e66852f593273d7981bf.JPG
Jimbo1707820979
A Hornby 3-rail set, LMS 2-4-2 loco, with a heavy big blue controller with a nice-to-operate lever moving over round brass contacts. Must be an archaeology piece by now, I should think. This was in 1938 (No, that's not a misprint ! 😀 ).
Slornie
Not counting a clockwork Thomas and Percy my first train set was Hornby's R778 Flying Scotsman set (c1995). The track mat it came with had three complete ovals printed on it (R1, R2 and R3) which I don't think I've ever seen in other sets or sold separately. As a matter of fact the baseboard with that completed track layout is still propped up against the wall in my parents dining room! 😀
RDS
/media/tinymce_upload/783631570b8d3d086a967eca55f5700f.JPGI think it was around 1962, for Christmas, I received what I now know to be a Class 20 Diesel in Green. If I remember correctly, I was a little disappointed (although obviously, I did not show it) because it didn't look like a 'real' train. I assume I wanted a Steam Train shape. One of my first purchases when I started my present layout a few years ago, was a Bachmann Class 20 in Green which I converted to DCC. How times change! Sadly all items have disappeared althought I have a few components in my bit box and may have the wheel wagon somewhere. However, I have managed to source most of the items on Ebay and have got everything except the freight depot kit.
kjiwizard
47606 with 4 trucks and an oval of grey track. It was powered by battery when I was about 5 or 6 although I suppose it could have had mains v transformer. When the battery ran out Christmas night the engine disappeared as Dad had put it away so I didn't square the wheels off. Got new batteries on my birthday in October. Even BR didn't run that late!
