Hornby Tender Drive connection issues

hello everyone i have a old Hornby Margate Made 1993-1994 Princess elizabeth locomotive, the model is very jerkish on the rails and sometimes doesnt move at all, i checked to make sure everything is clean, the wheels, anything else that can pick up electricity, and it is, the motor runs fine when connected to anthor margate made chassis, Is there some kind of short circuit or issue with the chassis in general, or is it just a connection problem? the track is cleaned and everything. Awaiting a answer for this issue. thank you.

 I found this with my margaste built Saint and 8F possibly of a similarvintage which had been in storage. Assuming the pickup method is the same, Check that the brass contact pin on the tender is bright and clean and do the same with the phospher bronze (?) pickups on the coupling bar. Also ensure that the both pickups touch the pin. I am also assuming that there is good conectivity between the loco wheels and the pickups on the coupling bar.

 

Also if the tender runs with another chassis (I assume you mean an unpowered loco, does the Princess run OK with another motorized tender(probaly should have asked that first)

I have found that sometimes the loco axles have been over oiled or have accumulated grease over the years, so give the axles a good clean and light oiling and see if that helps.

light corrosion can also have the same effect

no luck. i think it maybe the entire front chassis in general, a short circuit or something. but theres no wires in the chassis on the front though. i cleaned everything the other day, stripped the entire thing down and gave a good clean, but however when i move the coupling part up to the top of the brass pin on the tender, the motor runs normally. i have a spare connecting pin but it does the same thing, what a mystery! what should i do in order to fix this if you guys know how to? pretty sure its a connection issue. the motor runs fine on other chassis'es....  ☹️

 This may be obvious, but are the brass 'fingers' on the loco coupling intact and correctly adjusted?  I don't have the Princess but the Schools has a similar arrangement and sometimed the delicate brass fingers get bent.

 

Also I believe some locos have two seperate connections in the coupler, and there are two levels of brass finger.  These all need to connect the correct part of the pin.

 

You may need to replace the coupler if the finger contacts are broken.  If you are handy you could bypass the pin altogether and solder a fine jumper wire from loco to tender.  This would result in the loco and tender being permanently coupled.

i live in america so i just have  simple bachmann track and transformer, i cleaned everything, still no luck. im starting to think it is the bare chassis part, what does the bare chassis part even do? S.4557 for anyone who needs to know what part it is. i replaced the coupler on the back of the princess elizabeth model, still no luck, i think i should add some weights in the back, for some reason it seems to go when theres more pressure put on the back..

Does the loco have the motor in the Tender or the Engine ? I have an old Hornby Princess circa 1989 with the motor n the Tender - I have discovered the pickups for one track are in the loco body, and the pickups for the other track are in the tender. If the "whiskers" on the Loco do not press onto the pin on the Tender tightly the motor does not run well - if at all. One mod you can try is to solder a small fine wire to the pickup wire in the Tender body and run it down to the wiskers on the Loco, and solder it to them - of course this means the loco and tender are permenantly attached - so you have to be more careful when handling, and pick up both Loco and tender together.
