Virtual Railway 2

PLEASE NOTE: Patches and upgrades are available from the HVR support page.

Q. Can I use my HVR1 layouts with HVR2?

A. No, the files are saved in an incompatible format.

Q. How do I bypass the introduction video?

A. Simply press the return key while the video is running.

Q. How do I check what graphics capability my PC has?

A. Go to:

  1. Start > Run
  2. Type 'dxdiag' (without quote marks)
  3. Click on 'Display' tab
  4. Under 'Device' (on left hand side of box), check 'Approx. Total Memory' - this should be more than '16.0 MB'. If so, your graphics capability is fine. If not, you need to upgrade your graphics card to run this program efficiently.

Q. How do I know if a patch I have attempted to download has installed correctly?

A. You can tell by looking at the HVR2 configuration tool - the features included on the patch should be present with this tool. If not, the process may have failed.

The installation process for all HVR2 patches has been tested on different Windows releases and the installation of the patch should work in most cases. If it does not, don't worry. The patch can still be installed, although the process may have to be carried out manually. If this is the case, please contact our dedicated HVR2 Helpdesk or telephone 01843 233525.

Q. I get an error message ‘A required DLL File, DINPUT8.DLL was not found'. What does this mean?

A. This is a conflict with a DirectX 8.1 file. Please install DirectX 8.1 (provided on the HVR2 CD-Rom).

Q. I have an error message ‘error 1311 source file not found’ - what can I do?

A. Copy the disk to a temporary folder on the hard drive. Open the folder and double left click on ‘chooser’. Once installed, delete the temporary folder.

Q. I have an error message ‘missing dll file oleacc'. Is there anything that I can do?

A. The Oleacc.dll file is a Windows accessibility file, and this error only occurs on Windows 98 First Edition machines. To resolve this issue:

  1. run Windows Update
  2. install Microsoft Active Accessibility 2.0

Q. Is there a patch that will solve the problems I am having with HVR2?

A. Regularly check back on the 'Virtual Railway' page of this website for the latest patch. These patches are designed to rectify some of the problems that you may experience in HVR2. Prior to downloading these patches, ensure that you read the installation notes.

If you still experience problems after installing a patch, contact Hornby Customer Care on 01843 233525 or email them directly.

While these patches have been written in an attempt to solve some problems with HVR2, following customer comments, there is no guarantee that it will work for all users, depending on individual PCs and its specification.

Q. Is there an upgrade from HVR1 to HVR2?

A. No, the two programs are incompatible.

Q. My Firewall will not let me download any patches or expansion packs - what can I do?

A. As patches and expansion packs are self installing .exe files, you may have to turn off or adjust the settings of any Firewalls that you have installed on your PC. You should disable your Firewall before attempting to download any files and do not forget to re-enable the Firewall after completing the download. If you require assistance with this your PC supplier or security software vendor should be able to advise you on the correct procedure.
