Q. How can I overcome the problem of flickering lights on my Class 50?

A. Tests have shown that the cleanliness of your locomotive's wheels and the track it is running on will affect the amount of flicker in the lights. By ensuring the locomotive's wheels and pick-ups are kept clean, and the track it is running on is also cleaned regularly, this will prevent excessive flicker in the lights.

Q. How do I remove the body from a Hornby 0-6-0 Class 2721 locomotive?

A. The locomotive body is held to the chassis by two clips at the front of the body and one at the back. Carefully prise apart the locomotive body where the clips are, and remove.

Q. I have replaced the brushes and springs on my locomotive, but it still won't run. I have checked all the other working parts and nothing seems out of place - what else can I do?

A. Ensure that the area where the brushes make contact is clean - you can do this with a cotton wool bud. Be careful not to damage any other part or leave strands of the cotton wool bud in the locomotive.

Q. My Hornby controller cuts out after a few moments. If I leave it switched off for about five minutes and they try to use it again, it works for a few moments and then cuts out again. Is there a fault with the controller?

A. What seems to be causing this is a short circuit somewhere on your layout.

There are several things to check:

  • make sure the wires going into the controller, and those going to the power connecting clip, are not touching without being insulated
  • make sure the insulation around the wire has not come off and there are no bare wires touching each other
  • are there any metal objects bridging the two rails?
  • follow one rail and check that it doesn’t meet the other rail anywhere (for example, if you have a reverse loop)
  • are the locomotives causing the fault, i.,e. are all the wheels on the track and are the locomotives in full working order?

If all the above is in order, contact Hornby Customer Care on 01843 233525 or via email. Alternatively, return the controllers to your nearest Hornby Service Dealer who will be able to offer you advice on this matter.
