Ask anyone in the street what the name Hornby means and it is a fair guess that the majority would answer “model trains”. For over 90 years Hornby have been producing model railways, much to the delight of generation after generation. Hornby’s first models were formed from tinplate and were twice the size of the Hornby models of today. Powered by a clockwork motor, the locomotives and rolling stock, although crude in appearance compared to what is available today brought thrills of excitement and joy to many a child and to that matter many an adult who looked on.
Over the decades the large tinplate locomotives and rolling stock gave way to the more refined ‘00’ scale models and with improvements in engineering and moulding techniques Hornby models became increasingly defined and immensely more accurate in scale appearance than would have been thought possible decades previous. However, even with all the refinements Hornby models have continued to pay homage to the original Hornby ethos of 90 years ago and that is to bring enjoyment and excitement to all those who derive a great deal of satisfaction from operating a Hornby model railway. Of course Hornby models these days are indeed a far cry from days gone by but the simple fact remains that for generation after generation a Hornby model means model railways.
